Usually the history of India is equated with the British, our Independence movement and the Mughals. In between come a few names such as Ashoka and his Kalinga war, Prithviraj Chauhan and his daring escapades and a couple of others. If you go back a bit, the Slave Dynasty is spoken about with their establishment of the Sultanate in India.

However, the southern parts of the country are usually forgotten in all this with the exception of Cholas or the Nairs of Kerela coming to mind. To address this knowledge gap, author and former Chief of Staff of MP Shashi Tharoor came out with the book ‘Rebel Sultans’, wherein he digs deep into the history of the Deccan.

Deccan Sultanate

He looks into how the Delhi Muslim Sultans uprooted the southern Hindu dynasties in their quest for power and money, but themselves lost the plot when it came down to controlling the southern parts of the country. In effect, new kingdoms were born, which would attract warrior and cultural talent from all around the world with the Deccan becoming the chosen land for acquiring fame and riches. It is also the same Deccan which would give birth to Maratha power and begin the decline of the Mughal imperials.

If you do not have the time to read this book, you need not worry. We have broken down the book into 9 summaries, which will be delivered to you daily starting Monday. All you need to do is spend 5 minutes for 9 days and by the end of it, you will know ‘WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED IN THE DECCAN’.
